Although they are united as women scorned by the establishment, there’s also fierce competition between them: the ambitious but overbearing Charlotte, who claims writing as “her” thing; the hot-tempered yet prolific Emily; and the initially meek Anne who actually has the boldest ideas and a passionate social conscience. This is not a story about well-behaved women. This is a story about the power of words, about sisters and sisterhood, and about love and jealousy. Sarah Gordon’s raucously funny new play upends the ever-enduring yet constantly contended myths surrounding the Brontë sisters in her irreverent retelling of the sibling power dynamics that shaped their uneven rise to fame.
