MARJORIE PRIME

by Jordan Harrison

SEPTEMBER 24 & 25, 2016 @ 7:30 PM

Marjorie Prime

From one of the country’s most adventurous young writers (Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black), Jordan Harrison brings the compassionate and provocative story of Marjorie Prime. It’s the age of artificial intelligence, and 85-year-old Marjorie - a jumble of disparate, fading memories - has a handsome new companion who’s programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? The New York Times hailed this richly spare, wondrous new play as “a tender, searching comedy... a thought-provoking play about memory, its corruption, and our insistence that technology can help us outwit death.”

Hot Club of San Francisco: Cinema Vivant
HOT CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO: CINEMA VIVANT

Performing in the Hot Club tradition of Django Reinhardt, Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant, a magical evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live gypsy jazz. As images flicker to life, HCSF musicians play their blend of Spanish guitar, jazz rhythms, and fast swing, matching every movement on the screen with characteristic virtuosity, passion, and humor. HCSF is led by the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling, and features the amazing violin of Grammy™ Award-winning Evan Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section. Reviving the gypsy caravans of the past, HCSF, whose sound has been called “intricate, scorching and often brilliant” by Acoustic Guitar, brings life to some of the earliest stop-action animated films that still exist: There It Is(1928), The Cameraman's Revenge (1912), and The Mascot (1933).

A Christmas Story

Based on the classic 1983 motion picture, A Christmas Story is the comedy gift you will cherish all holiday long! In 1940’s Indiana, a bespectacled boy named Ralphie Parker has a big imagination and one wish for Christmas – a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, only to hear the consistent response: “You'll shoot your eye out!” All of the elements from the beloved movie are here, including the family’s exploding furnace, a kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a school bully, and triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole. A Christmas Story is a show that the whole family will enjoy, capturing holiday wonder with delicious wit and a heart of gold. “A joyous Christmas miracle.” — The Associated Press

Adapted by David S. Craig

February 23-26 & March 3-5, 2017
Th-Sat shows @ 7:30 PM

The Neverending Story

Told with all the thrills of a classic adventure, the story begins with Bastian Balthazar Bux, a lonely boy who stumbles upon a strange book, The Neverending Story, in a curious bookshop. Upon opening it, he learns of a land called Fantastica, where a vast, black emptiness, called The Nothing, is taking over the magical world. Quickly drawn into the story of Atreyu, an unlikely hero who has been tasked to save this world, the story’s adventure takes Bastian to the far corners of Fantastica, through the Swamp of Sadness, the cave of a giant spider, and the maze of the Southern Oracle, aided by the happy Luck Dragon, Falkor. Adapted from the 1979 novel and 1984 film, young and old alike will delight in the fantasy tale of a boy whose wholehearted belief in the story, and eventually in himself, saves everything. “A gripping adventure, full of weird and wondrous creatures … In pursuit of a goal, a boy becomes a man.” — Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Niyaz
Niyaz

Currently based in Montreal, Niyaz was founded by Iranian-born vocalist Azam Ali and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian, both JUNO Award nominees. Described by the Huffington Post as “an evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music,” Niyaz—which means “yearning” in both Farsi and Urdu—blend medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from Turkey, India, and their native Iran with acoustic instrumentation and modern electronic rhythms. The result is a mesmerizing folktronica, a distinctively 21st century global trance sound that crosses not only stylistic and cultural boundaries but generational ones as well. The music is enhanced by Ali’s rich, captivating vocals and by conscientious, spiritual lyrics that aim to create music with a uniting, social message.

Meet Beane. He is an eccentric - an outsider from life – and no one, including his well-meaning sister, Joan, and his brother-in-law, Harry, can seem to get through. Following a burglary on Beane’s apartment, however, Joan is baffled to find her brother blissfully happy and in love with his assailant, Molly. Suddenly all the love songs make sense to Beane, and his happiness begins to rub off on his sister’s life too - right down to the nuts and bolts of her marriage. Cabaret: The Musical

Right this way, your table’s waiting at the Kit Kat Klub! It’s 1931 in Berlin, Germany and the seedy Klub is a place of decadent celebration, a place to pretend the party will go on forever, even as the world falls apart on the outside with Hitler’s rise. Cabaret follows the interlocking stories of Sally Bowles, a beguiling, self-destructive cabaret singer, Cliff Bradshaw, a young American journalist, and the citizens of Berlin as they are caught up in the swirling maelstrom of a changing society. Led by the enigmatic and dazzling Emcee, Cabaret is an intoxicating theatrical experience, featuring well-known classics of the musical stage such as “Money”, “Tomorrow Belongs To Me”, “Willkommen”, “Don’t Tell Mama”, “Maybe This Time”, and of course “Cabaret”. Filled with powerful music and dance, the New York Post calls Cabaret “one for the ages.”
